"The Quarantine"
By F.A.
Rowan was scavenging when he heard it. The quarantine zone had been set up months ago to keep in the infection and he had been trapped inside. If someone caught the infection it changed them to the point of no return. He heard the scream before he saw it. It’s scream like metal scraping against metal.
“Run.” Rowan sprinted out of the building and out onto the road, it instantly started to chase him.
Rowan ran with no thought just running. He knew that if he ran to his hideout it would follow him and his hideout would be compromised so he continued to run down the derelict streets of his home, dodging anything in his path. Rowan heard the thing scream again and it confirmed his worries, it was catching up to him. He needed a plan and that’s when he saw the bridge ahead of him, he started to turn left when he realized that if he did go left it would get to him so, he continued on.
Rowan ran straight for the bridge seeing that it had broken in the middle splitting the bridge in two. He ran faster and faster as the thing screamed again. He made it onto the bridge and looked over his shoulder to see how far the thing was except it wasn’t just one, it was three chasing him now. This made him go even faster as he ran to the edge of the gap. He was just about to run off the edge when he jumped, Rowan soared through the air as he flailed his arms. He caught the edge of the other side and pulled himself up and turned around to look back to the other side and saw them standing on the edge. They looked down a the rushing water, screamed at him and left.
“ They didn’t want to risk falling… I made it. I made it!” Rowan said with relief. He had taken the risk and it paid of. He started the walk home being carful not to get chased again.
